#JM has said before that Spike was originally supposed to die halfway through s2  #but he’d just had a son and needed money and wanted to keep his job on Buffy  #so he did everything he could to make sure the audience liked Spike  #so that the writers would keep him around longer  #and one of the ways JM made the audience like him was to really play Spike’s devotion to Dru  #and take any possibly mean or dismissive lines like above  #and make them doting and loving and ahhhh  #80% of why I love Spike is because of how JM chose to play him  #so thanks dude  #you’re  a star

#I love SMGs choices in scenes like this #like in the script it’s probably written as ‘Buffy replies faux cheerily’ #but the way you get this little shit eating grin from her right before #like this is a bad place full of bad things #violence has just been demonstrated as a consequence of resistance #and like you know she’s gonna resist – that’s not what I’m enjoying primarily (tho I am enjoying that) #I love that SMG’s Buffy is just an aggressively chipper little shit-talker when the chips are down #it’s not gonna be a cool thing to say #it’s not gonna be pre-asskicking boasts #it’ll actually probably be a pun #or jolly valley girl sarcasm with an eye roll #bad things don’t just want to hurt her they want her to be scared #and sure she can defend herself physically – but I love how she counters threat with ridicule #other slayers like kendra or faith are right to business or darkly quippy if needed #buffy’s the only one who sees the gaping maw of a bat-faced fiend and squints at him and says ’…you have ‘fruit punch’ mouth’. #in this scene it’s not only ‘you’re not the boss of me’ but it’s all the way to ‘I’m not even scared so fuck you’ #(aggressively impish grin) #IM BUFFY! #THE VAMPIRE SLAYER! #AND YOU ARE??
