To me this has always been so extraordinarily meaningful for me, because most of the violence we’ve seen from Giles before has been in his Ripper moments, which frequently involve him not wearing/removing his glasses. To me, the glasses have always been, more than anything, a signal of Watcher vs. Man. Giles the man might not have been able to stomach this. GIles the man might have been overtaken by the same compassion that made Buffy spare Ben’s life. But Giles the Watcher? He knows full well that the battle against evil is rarely a clean one; he knows that sometimes it’s not a matter of doing the right thing, because there is no right thing; he knows, just as he knew earlier when he was suggesting that Dawn might have to die, that sometimes an innocent life is the cost of the world’s survival. And replacing his glasses—the symbol of an authority figure whose position at a comfortable distance from the action allows him to see the map of not just the battle, but the entire war—always read to me as a sign of him slipping back into that role again. This isn’t Ripper that we’re seeing—it is absolutely, 100% Rupert Giles of the Watchers’ Council.
As her mentor, her ally, her surrogate father, Giles is proud of Buffy’s moral compass, that refuses to let her take an innocent life. But as her Watcher, he knows that part of his duty is to cross the lines that his Slayer can’t or won’t.
One of the best Giles scenes in the entire show. Easily.
Strong is fighting. It’s hard and it’s painful and it’s every day. It’s what we have to do, and we can do it together, but if you’re too much of a coward for that, then burn.
