“Big, serious brown eyes were staring right into his from only a few inches away. The child had clambered half over the arm of Derek’s chair to study him at close range, her little rosebud mouth pursed in concentration.“Uh.” Derek couldn’t look away as the girl reached out one pudgy hand and patted him gently on the cheek. Her scent was soft and sweet and somehow a bit familiar, just enough to keep Derek from shying away.”
This is utterly sweet and totally fluffy. AU where Derek has left Beacon Hills and is en route back after a long absence, he bumps into an old friend with a new addition at the airport on Christmas eve and the possibilities seem endless.
Derek meets Stiles in a department store while shopping for his family, after seeing a little girl crying for her Dad on the floor. They part ways and Derek doesn’t think he’ll see Stiles again. Beacon Hills may not be that big, but it still doesn’t mean he’ll ever run into Stiles, because that’s just not how Derek’s life works. Despite what Erica tries to tell him whenever she can, that sometimes fate can happen, Christmas miracles, whatever, it won’t.
(Or, the one where Stiles is a single dad, Derek falls for him, and Christmas ends up better than Derek expected.)
Okay so I know this is a Christmas fic, but I’m a winter baby and I’m always down for a sweet little Christmas story. Derek is the sweetest thing in this – and Stiles and his daughter are a beautiful pair. Derek is a writer and bookstore owner (swoon) and he and Stiles bump into each other enough times that its beyond coincidence and firmly in ‘fated to be’ territory. Everybody is still alive and this fic will warm the cockles of your heart at any time of the year.
Other than being a werefox with a werekit for a son, Stiles’ life is relatively normal. He’s a single parent, owns a modest sized home, and has a variety of kid-friendly meal recipes tucked neatly under his belt. It might be just him and Nate, but they have it in the bag. Nothing is missing from their lives.
That is, until Nate befriends a girl named Sadie Hale on his first day of kindergarten. Then everything changes.
This fic has both Stiles and Derek as single dads but it’s from Stiles’ perspective so I’ve lumped it with the other singe dad!Stile fics. A lovely AU with werefox Stiles, little ones making their first best friends, dance recitals and light up trainers. Oh, and sweet sweet fluff. Prepare yourselves.
Stiles in bed isn’t really something Derek should be thinking about. Ever. Because the person who normally picks Lily up from school? Is Scott. Lily’s other parent. And Stiles’s partner.
Not to mention the entire source of Derek’s current misery.
–AKA, the one in which Derek thinks Scott and Stiles are in a relationship and that they want to threesome with Derek.
Spoiler Alert? They aren’t and they don’t.
This is delightfully fluffy and full of pining. Miscommunication, misunderstandings and a happy ending. Derek is bros with Erica and Kira (and yes, that’s as good as you’re imagining), Stiles is not in fact Scott’s romantic life partner, and Derek’s awkwardness ends with more than a sterek-y happy ending. Again, Stiles isn’t actually Lily’s biological father, but he’s her dad in all the ways that count. Prepare to have your heart melted, the awkward situation measurement raise high (this is Stiles Stilisnki we are talking about ok?) and the loveliest softest kindergarten teacher Derek.
“Stiles is funny and smart and kind and is also his daughter’s teacher and his boss’s son. On the list of people who are off-limits, Stiles has held the top spot for as long as Derek has known him.Since Derek is Derek, Stiles also happens to rank number one on the list of people Derek is in love with. Seriously. His life is like a bad Hallmark movie.”
Another Christmas themed fic, a human AU with deputy!Derek and his daughter Annie who is in Stile’s class. This is so adorable and Derek’s internal monologue is hilarious – look out for the Uncle Peter reference because it made me giggle.
There’s a lot of screaming going on inside the first house Stiles visits. He isn’t really worried, because it sounds like kids, but then the door opens and hi, says his dick, because the dude in front of him is gorgeous, built like a god with a face like thunder. Stiles wants to lick that solid jaw line. Hold the fuck on, says his cop brain, because the dude’s got kids hanging all over him; one’s on his back, skinny legs looped around his waist, and another two hanging off one arm, toes barely brushing the ground. There’s a tubby toddler clinging to his leg like a koala, and he’s got a baby tucked into the crook of the one arm that doesn’t have kids hanging off it. Stiles’ mouth drops open.
“How many of those kids did you kidnap?” he asks before he can wrangle his brain into submission.
The man gives him a look that says what the fuck is wrong with you and snaps, “You think I’d subject myself to this on purpose?”
“Oooh,” says one of the kids hanging off his arm. “I’m telling Mom.”
This is one of my favourite single dad!Derek fics – I have to admit. It’s long and have a bit of everything you might want – deputy!Stiles, werewolves are known, the Hale fire still happened but Laura is alive. There’s a touch of angst, some perfectly achey pining, drama, risk, and heroics. Derek and his daughter are written beautifully and so is Stiles and Derek’s developing relationship. Reading it again to rec it was a total pleasure.
At first Derek didn’t know what to do with Romy. She was this tiny, squirming, pink thing that he had no idea how to read. But she was also his niece, and the only thing he had left in the world. He thought about giving her up and going back to California, but the thought of being so close to the place where his family had once been so alive hurt him, and so did the thought of letting her go. And so, in Chicago he stayed, and the Hills were forgotten. He didn’t want to go back. And no one came looking for him anyway.
This is just -UGH- so good okay? Slow build, healthy relationships, the loveliest little girl character, and a small group of new friends for our favourite boys. Derek is not in fact a daddy in this fic – he is an uncle – but he is the sole carer and guardian for Romy so he’s basically her father. There’s tragedy in the beginning – but its definitely not the theme – this is not an angsty fic. Derek and Stiles have both grown up and matured, they’re both open and honest and ready for each other and you will find yourself wiggling in your seat in happiness. Yes. You will, I promise! And you’ll be even happier when you see that bicanthrope has made this into a series, I’ve linked the first part so do explore the rest once you’ve read this!
“Shift changes,” Stiles explains. “I’m your new delivery boy. See, I got the hat,” he points, “the clipboard,” he points, “and the truck.”
“What about my groceries?” Derek asks with a raise of his brows. “You got those?”
A short and sweet fic with Derek, his daughter Ava, and Stiles the delivery boy. Bubble bath beards, super hero origins, temporary tattoos and kitchen confessions make for a fluffy, happy ending.
“Today is Scott’s first day of kindergarten and Derek is terrified.”
So, I think it is fair of me to say this is a standout of the singe dad!Derek genre (imho), its certainly one of my favourites. Derek is not the biological father of Scott and Jackson, he’s their uncle and is their guardian and parent after the death of Laura and her husband. It’s beautifully written, Derek’s relationships with his boys are written so so well – each one different and unique little characters that Derek clearly works so hard to be good for. Stiles is Scott’s kindergarten teacher. Cue the long haul for slow burn, genuine friendship building, found families, integrating a relationship into a single parent family. And lots of pre-school crafts. Because of course. This is just a lovely, lovely fic and is so worth a read and a bookmark – this is not the first time I have re-read it and I’m sure I’ll come back to it again!
“So funny story,” Stiles winces, “Remember when I joked you couldn’t get me pregnant?”Derek nods his head. He remembers pretty much everything from that day.“Right,” Stiles bobs his head, stops himself and does a little ta-da gesture towards Jacy, “Surprise?”
Ok, so – this is a good one. Derek leave Beacon Hills and spends five years bonding with his pack and sorting himself out – only to return and find out that secrets have been kept from him. A tiny bit of angst, more melancholy than sad, and a huge amount of heart aching hope and happiness. For reals – Jacy is a gorgeous character.
Stiles has always loved Halloween; in the Stilinski-Hale household, it’s officially, no question, his holiday. (Derek can have Christmas, with its lights and cheerful decorations and prickly-needled trees.) This year, though, their daughter’s decided to dress up as Little Red Riding Hood – and there’s really only one choice to play the wolf. The question is: will Derek agree to wear horn-rimmed glasses and a poor excuse for a robe all night? And what’s Stiles’s role in this family outing?
Also known as: a seasonal burst of domestic holiday fluff.
Established Sterek with a little girl – absolutely heartwarming and adorable. Halloween is the perfect time to exploit having a werewolf Daddy and the cute factor is strong in this fic. A gorgeous slice of life fic with domesticity, family, sweetness, and hilarious halloween costumes.
Stiles’ kid has a tendency to get into fights and possibly has bad taste in friends. Or enemies. Stiles isn’t sure yet, but he’s pretty sure the other kid’s dad is too hot to be human.
Both Derek and Stiles are single dads (spoiler alert: not for long) and their children get involved in a fight at school. Werewolves are known, Stiles is a deputy – yes, with handcuffs – and the three chapters follow the relationship from one fluffy and heartwarming moment to the next. Stiles’ parenting style is exactly what you’d expect from him and you get the added highlight of Erica as the sensei at the martial arts class that Stiles’ daughter Emmy goes to. How awesome is that? Totally delightful, in its entirety.
When Stiles got an interview for an internship at Fangs & Fur magazine, the publication owned by the well known and widely respected alpha Talia Hale, he never expected it to be offered an actual job by Alpha Hale herself. He also never expected for his life to change so much after he met the man whose department he was assigned to.
Stiles was not prepared for Derek Hale’s cub, either.
Okay so it starts off with single dad!Derek – but this definitely belongs in the parent!sterek section of this little fic rec because this is just the sweetest most lovely story of families destined to be together. Prepare yourself for the joys of alive!Hale family (come to think of it – alive!everybody basically), Stiles in glasses and a beanie, protective Derek and the best snark and banter between every single characters. This leads into a gorgeous series of fics that will literally make your teeth fall out they are so fluffy as sweet. This fic is like settling down with a cosy blanket and a box of chocolates and just savouring the sweetness. Plus, baby Alex is beyond adorable and will have you cooing in your seat, I promise.
If there’s one thing Stiles Stilinski knows, it’s that Deputy Derek Hale absolutely Does Not Like him. The only reason Derek even tolerates him is because their kids are worryingly codependent.
So Stiles is understandably confused when a very feral Derek shows up in his backyard after a call gone wrong and proceeds to move in with him.
Alright alright alright. Listen up folks – this one has it all – deputy!Derek, magic!Stiles, both of them have adorable kidlets who are best friends and yes oh yes one of my most favourite tropes – feral!Derek. The not-quite-friends to lovers theme is written beautifully and you feel Derek’s fears so much – and they are so eloquently and elegantly put to bed by this Stiles’ unconscious and natural good-heartedness. Featuring dino shaped nuggets, more mac and cheese than you’d think healthy – and an entire deer. This fic has its dark moments, Derek’s past is with its own tragedy in this au BUT alive!Hales, and a happy, fluffy ending leave me feeling blissed out and ready for my own cookout.
““Anything,” Derek’s eyes are determined, boring into Stiles’.
Stiles huffs a laugh, “Careful there, big guy. Don’t want to be promising anything to every necromancer you meet. Some might ask for your soul or someth—”
“I’ll give you my soul to bring her back,” Derek says, his voice steady and strong with resolve, “if that’s what you want.”
Stiles’ mouth gapes open for a moment before his brain kicks into gear and he stutters out, “N-no, I don’t ask for that. I only ask for money.”
(Or the one in which Stiles is a necromancer who needs help stopping a rogue alpha and Derek is the solution, but at what cost?)”
This is a really gorgeous fic, full of emotion and it’s fair share of angst but it never feels overdone or hopeless. The characters are all beautifully written, and Stiles and Derek are lovely together. There are major character deaths, which is not something I would usually read, but I just think it is all handled so well that it is worth giving a shot. It has a happy, hopeful ending with resolution of the angst, and our boys driving off into the sunset cracking awful zombie related jokes. Oh. And prepare for Jackson to be your favourite character.
““It was a true love spell,” he admits quietly. “It was supposed to help me find my true love. And apparently I suck at magic as much as I suck at dating because I screwed this up too.”
~~~
In which Stiles’ Valentine’s Day love spell goes very wrong.
Or perhaps very right.”
This is so so sweet, and so so cute. You’re going to love it. Stiles casts his spell and then Derek fixes it. Derek’s perspective is so well done, and you get to see the full extent of his badass exterior giving way to the marshmallow we all know he is on the inside!
It wasn’t obvious at first—his car, his clothes, the people closest to him, they all smell enough like his old scent that it overpowers anything new. As far as emotions go, there’s the usual anxiety, stress, tension, exhaustion, guilt.
But the base notes of his scent, the primary olfactory information anyone would use to track Stiles, are… stronger now, and not in a way that relates to being unwashed. They’re sharper, more noticeable, less human and more…
Magical.”
This is such good fun, lots of moments that made me laugh, fantastic characterisations, and Derek’s perspective is just as sardonic as you think it would be. Stiles and his magic are just so…Stiles. And the way it all unfolds is lovely – the last lines will put a big smile on your face because secretly-a-dork Derek Hale is a beautiful thing.
The Spark had been cool. It had been small, manageable. He could do some funky stuff with Mountain Ash, all with the power of belief.
And now here he is, his Spark blown wide open, apparently coming down with a fatal case of magical overload, and all that stands between him and bleeding out is a grumpy owl that looks suspiciously like a feathered version of Derek Hale.
(In which Stiles learns he’s a witch, but instead of a wand and a trip to Diagon Alley, he gets blood magic, a grumpy and reluctant owl as his companion, and an accidental blood bond with Derek Hale.)”
This is a fantastic story, with an equally fantastic equal, with a darker side to Stiles having magic. It’s really well written, with funny moments as well as some more horror themed moments! You are going to love Steve. Heed the warnings my lovelies, there is blood and gore throughout. But there is also lovely friendships and Stereky goodness too!
“Shealwaysreads said the perfect summary for this series is: ‘Wherein Stiles nuts and runs, suspects any and all fairytale endings, but falls foul of sustained and earnest wooing by his alpha prince Derek Hale’”
I debated keeping this series for a soulmate fic rec, but this has badass Emissary!Stiles and is one of the most fun series I’ve read in a long time, written by my babe @inell. There’s your classic masquerade ball to kick things off, with a werewolf mating bite, but that’s where the standard trope ends. This Stiles is definitely not one for conforming to expectations, and instead of an instant happily-ever-after you get to read a beautifully real feeling relationship develop. The smut is scorching, the fluff is blush inducing, and the characters are amazing. You will love Stiles-Scott-Allison. And you will be so glad to have read this series!
“Stiles gets magic wish-granting powers, but only when he’s in danger. He begins to teleport to Derek in increasingly awkward moments.”
This fic had me quite literally wheezing with laughter in bed when I read it. It’s just got so many perfect moments – Derek’s infamous backflip, lucky charms, sneak-attacks. This will all make sense when you read it. Which you should. It’s a ball from beginning to end!
“Soon after Deaton begins training him, Stiles starts weaving talismans for the pack.”
This is melancholy and so so beautifully written. Derek’s perspective is the perfect way to see the way that Stiles’ magic is changing him. It’s a really lovely little fic.
“Derek’s just moved back to Beacon Hills with his young daughter, whose newest favorite thing is Mr. Stiles and his magic shop. Derek likes Stiles a lot too, except he’s a bit worried about how Stiles’ magic is… actually real, and the local pack and their Emissary might find that a problem.”
This whole fic is completely adorable. You get yourself a lovely bit of single dad!Derek, magic!Stiles, and a beautifully settled and successful pack in Beacon Hills. Gena and Jimmy are the cutest kids, and Derek and Stiles are just as sweet. It’s a lovely, fluffy little fic to put a smile on your face.
“"Are you going to buy anything else?“ Professional Eyebrows says and Stiles would like to buy him. A cup of coffee. On a date.
He just ends up pointing at the crate of whatever the fuck is behind Professional Eyebrows’ head and says, "Uh, a box of that stuff.”
P.E. turns, glances at the crate, and raises an eyebrow at Stiles. “You want a box of charmed rattlesnake tail?” God, magic is so fucking weird.
“Yeah.” Stiles nods because he’s making an ass out of himself. The hipster vampire browsing in the corner is not so subtly laughing at him. The sooner he leaves the better.
–
The one where Derek Hale is a Professional Werewolf Witch who owns a magic shop and Stiles fails at being smooth on a regular basis.”
The one where Stiles and Derek are both magical! This is hilarious from start to finish, and all of the accompanying cast are awesome. Scott and his love of dogs is basically who I am inside. This is fluffy and sweet with the perfect amount of snark for our two boys!
“Sighing, Stiles reaches for Derek’s big hands, cradled in his broad lap, his skin lighting up even more at Derek’s touch. He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes, preparing himself to look for Derek’s soulmate. Whoever you are, he thinks, you better be worth him.”
Okay, so I love everything that deleted-scenes writes – and this is no exception. Stiles’ magic in this fic is really well thought out and the way he and Derek interact is just so perfect. Stiles’ perspective is lovely, and his reaction to Derek is absolutely so on point. The whole fic just makes you happy, and the ending is too beautiful – I adore the scene of Derek protectively held by Stiles.
“Stiles has to perform some kind of protection spell/ritual to stop the latest threat to BH, but according to Deaton and his terrible, terrible magic books, it requires that he willingly take the ‘life essence’ of an alpha within him so he can power the spell. Yep, semen, because druids were giant pervs back in the day. And apparently that shit is like a magical battery.”
This is so much fun from start to finish, very much a magic made them do it scenario – but I’m sure they would have got there on their own in the end! I love the interactions between Derek and Stiles throughout, and the ending is perfect. Not to mention the amazing smut in between 😉
“There’s something weird about Beacon Hills that Stiles can’t quite put his finger on. The way everyone in town knows his name the day he arrives. The way they insist the melancholic howling that echoes through the forest every night is just a dog. The way his dad denies getting a dog, even though Stiles comes home to find one sprawled across his bed, some big black thing whose eyes gleam red in the right light. The way that massive oak tree out in the woods vibrates under his touch, pulsing with sickly life.
There’s something weird going on in this town, and Stiles is determined to get to the bottom of it.”
I love this fic a lot – it’s one I’ve re-read and honestly every time I read it I love it just as much. It’s beautifully written, and the whole idea of this town-wide pack is so incredibly pleasing. The sterek is slow build, but it’s perfectly done and it’s exactly how the characters would behave in this au I think. You will love all of the characters, and the world building, and oh – the Sheriff – you’re going to love him a lot. All I can say is you are in for a fantastic, long, and really satisfying read. You’ll thank me for it.
“Before Derek has the presence of mind to object, Stiles pushes the paper in his hands and makes for his jeep. “Just read it, okay?” is the last thing he says before slamming the door shut.
He starts the engine, and drives away in record time with gravel scrunching under his tires while Derek stands there dumfounded. He accelerates unusually fast, and the jeep’s back lights disappear into the night.
What. The. Fuck.”
This fic is a great imagining of what the alpha pack could have been like, and the ways that the Hale pack would have been stuck for ideas of how to save themselves. Stiles is a spark in this and enacts a ritual to protect the pack and their assorted loved ones. Derek’s perspective is lovely in this, and his view of the whole pack, and the way he takes Stiles’ advice (which works ofc) is really great to read. And the sex. Whoa boy. Awkward and tender and hot all at once.
“This is it, he thinks as he dips his fingers into the bowl. No coming back. Once you tie yourself to a pack, to an Alpha, it’s a connection that’ll always be there.”
Oh boy. Short and sweet and so sexy – magical finger-painting is my new fave.
“As you’re always so fond of pointing out, you’re the alpha. When bad shit happens to you, it affects all of us. If someone wants to use your alpha mojo or your wolf force or,” Stiles waves his hand, “whatever you want to call it for diabolical purposes? We need to be ready.”
This is great – I love the concept of the spell, and the intensity of the ritual itself. And I think with Stiles’ belief written all over him, our Derek will end up bulletproof.
“If you could only protect one person, who would it be?”
“Derek.”
“What would you do to keep him alive? What would you give up?”
“Anything. Everything.”
This is a really unusual fic, the narrative is not chronological, but it is beautifully weaved together. The Hale Pack that is imagined is a strange and dangerous one, but the future they have is beautiful. This fic might not be for everyone, but I really loved it. Try it, I think you’ll like it.
“Semantics, Derek thinks. All Derek really remembers is the press of Stiles’ lips against his, warm and wet, Stiles’ mouth tasting like blue cotton candy, and Stiles’ fingers curling into his shirt, and the clack of the roller coaster carts thundering above them. Derek hasn’t kissed all that many people in his life, but Stiles is the best kiss he’s ever had. He loves kissing Stiles, even now, two years later.
Derek’s head rolls back, and he stares up at the ceiling. “I chose Six Flags because you’d never been there,” he says, and when his neck rolls again, weakly, to face Stiles, he’s smiling at Derek.
“I know,” he says, and Derek thinks, of course you did.”
This is beautifully written, heed the tags though – our darling boy Derek doesn’t have a great time to start with. But his and Stiles’ interactions are gorgeous, and it is the sweetest of endings, I promise.
“The real question is what Stiles wants. If he’s looking forward to seeing Derek again because they’ll complete what they started a long time ago or if Stiles is nervous because he’s feeling apprehensive. There’s a real possibility that he told the pack to finally send Derek up in order to tell him thanks, but no thanks. A lot can happen in six years; people change and grow apart and it isn’t like they were allowed to talk.”
This is wonderfully done – there is so much world building and back story implied that just makes it such a rich scenario. Stiles and Derek and all of their interactions are beautiful, and the closing scene is so happy making.
“A packs connection to its territory is sacred, it’s the place that they call home, the place that they draw their strength, the place that protects them and shelters them. As long as the wolves care for the land, the land will care for the wolves.
After the fire when Derek and Laura left Beacon Hills, they left the land, and the land left them. For the past eight years the territory had been Hale’s in name alone. But that was going to change, tonight.”
This is another lovely pack fic, there’s so much emotional punch at the end you’ll adore it. It’s a really interesting spin on Stiles practicing magic, and a lovely exploration of what pack is.
“He doesn’t come to The Beacon to pick up people. It’s precisely the reason why he doesn’t go anywhere else. People in this neighborhood know him, know he’s not interested in being hit on, which allows him to have a drink in peace. Derek knows he’s good-looking, but the type of people it attracts disgust him. At least other werewolves can smell the unfriendliness on him and stay away, but that doesn’t stop everyone. He went to a gay bar with his coworker Isaac once and it was horrifying.”
You think this is going to be a snarky, sexy, hookup fic – and yes it is all of those things. BUT ALSO. Magic!Stiles, unexpected!feels, and ‘it’s-meant-to-be’ dreams. It’s all good stuff.
“By twenty-eight, Stiles has resigned himself to a quiet life of working in his magic shop, selling Jackson Whittemore fart-inducing tea, and looking after his goddaughter. It’s a good life. But the quiet goes to hell when his sister, Lydia, shows up with a crispy werewolf in her trunk and a bite mark on her shoulder, because hard on her heels comes the hottest person Stiles has ever seen, and he happens to be looking for his uncle.
You know, the dead guy Stiles helped Lydia bury last night.
(Or: the Pracitical Magic AU nobody asked for.)”
This is one of my favourite magic!Stiles fics – the world that the author has built is so believable and I adore Stiles and Lydia as siblings – their interactions are wonderful. This has everything I love – great Stiles & his friends interactions, Stiles as a parent, Scott being awesome, Lydia being awe inspiring, and Derek being his beautiful self. The last line will have you grinning all day.
“Stiles gets a call for help from his old babysitter, Laura Hale, after a slew of magical sabotage to the restaurant/gastropub she runs with her brother Derek. Mysterious magical and supernatural shenanigans are Stiles’ bread and butter, so who is he to deny what’s basically family?
Even if it does mean facing his age-old, hopeless crush on Derek again, and the fact that Derek hates him.”
This fic is an absolute joy to read – it’s got so many of my favourite things. Magic!Stiles, alive!Hales, chef!Derek, miscommunication, pining, baddie of the week. It’s got it all, and so many funny moments and sweetness and amazing character interactions. And the sterek is gorgeous – it’s the happiest of happy endings!
That’s all for this fic rec edition – I hope you love these fics as much as I do! Feel free to drop me a line with any suggestions for future fic rec editions you’d like to see!
Nonnie & Hannah! Y’all are great cheerleaders, let me tell you! I’m actually about to start revising #5 *dances* But that’s probably it for today because my brain’s getting tired. Also, your “inell saves 2017″ tag cracks me up!
Ooooooh. I love it when people subvert tropes or even just expectations for characters. Like, I love it when Stiles shows up in a fic – and he’s a werewolf – but he’s an Alpha. Or when Derek shows up as a big, bad Alpha werewolf who sexually is submissive. I just like it when writers take characters in different ways that you get to expect (though I love the classics as well tbh) and you get to explore a different perspective on a character or a ship.
In terms of fics that didn’t go at all how I expected?
Stiles. Don’t leave the loft no matter what. I’m sorry. We’re tracking down the incubus right now. Don’t leave. Please. Just. I’m sorry it had to be you. Just. Stiles, don’t leave, okay?
It’s Derek’s voice, broken and wretched, pleading in a way Stiles has never heard before. He doesn’t know what has happened, or what the incubus has done, but something in that tone of voice cuts him deep inside— makes him wonder— what happened?
Wherein an ill-advised floral arrangement leads to a whole new definition of obliviousness, accidental mate-bonds, and far more sex and tropes than one fic really needs.
or
Five times Derek and Stiles didn’t notice how close they were (literally) and then a whole bunch of times when they did…
“you took the train seat I always sit in and refused to move, so I sat on your lap and now we’re both too annoyed and awkwardly turned on to move” au
——
Stiles pulls out his own phone and actually starts texting somebody, and for whatever reason, that’s what offends Derek.
“What’re you doing?” he demands.
“Texting.”
“On my lap?”
“What do you want me to do? Hold a conversation with you? Tell you what I want for Christmas?”
Instead of being a normal person and saying, ‘I want you to get the hell off of me,’ Derek’s mouth decides, completely of its own accord, to say, “Well, it would be polite.”
Stiles feels like he can’t breathe with Derek looking at him like that. Stiles has always felt so small and insignificant under Derek’s gaze, like he was just some lowly creature barely worthy of his attention. But now he feels strong and empowered and wanted. He desperately wants to know what’s happening between them, what it all means and what it is exactly that Derek wants from him, but he’s terrified of the answer not being what he wants (if Derek deigns to answer him at all). So instead he submits to his other desire: he crosses the room and sinks into Derek’s lap as he presses their mouths together.
It’s enough to make him go with a vague, shaky hunch – enough to make him put just a tiny bit of pressure on Derek’s chest, something that Derek could easily resist – but Derek doesn’t. Keeps his eyes closed and lets himself be pushed, and Stiles gently nudges him into the chair behind him, and – shaking the entire time – crawls into his lap and straddles his thighs, his heart kicking up even faster at the feel of Derek underneath him, and the almost lost expression on Derek’s face as he opens his eyes again.
“C’mon,” Stiles whines, half-turning. “You can’t drag me into your lap and then expect me not to want to hit that.”
Mark dies a little at ever having heard that phrase come from his son’s mouth, let alone directed at an older, leather-jacket-wearing accused murderer with seemingly permanent three day growth.
anon that’s not weird at all!!! i don’t like sex in fics either i usually just skim it lmao 🙂 so these fics have no sex or innuendo, but jim and bones do kiss and share beds in some of them, i hope that’s ok? (maybe if you’re not too shy you can reply to this post and say whether you’re comfortable with kissing or not?)
anyway, something a little bit different this time around… all of these fics are fairly short, and as i was putting the list together i started to notice a chronology, so, yeah. instead of being in descending order of length, this list goes from academy-era to almost-curtain!fic.
“When Stiles gets stranded in the snow one dark and snowy night, he’s in real danger. Fortunately, he gets rescued by a man on a horse.”
This is a gorgeous fic – stranded Stiles, Derek to the rescue. With full on woodland cabin and home-made cookies to round out the sweetness. It’s a very soft, gentle and lovely fic to read – makes you feel all warm and hopeful.
“Derek isn’t sure why he buys the house. He doesn’t need the space, that much is certain. While it’s not as big as the one Derek grew up in, something about the cheerful yellow paint and the wide staircase (with banisters wide enough for children to slide down) draws him in.”
Ohhh. Oh, this is a good one. We get deputy!derek, a full pack, Derek and Stiles both growing up and maturing and finally finding their perfect moment to become. It might be more Christmas-tangential than full on Christmassy but its going on the list – the fairy lights at the end are too perfectly written to miss out on. You’ll love it.
“Stiles is funny and smart and kind and is also his daughter’s teacher and his boss’s son. On the list of people who are off-limits, Stiles has held the top spot for as long as Derek has known him.
Since Derek is Derek, Stiles also happens to rank number one on the list of people Derek is in love with. Seriously. His life is like a bad Hallmark movie.”
This is so cute. You all know about my weakness for parent!sterek and this has single dad Derek with the sweetest little girl who quite unintentionally makes everyone’s Christmas wish come true. It’s funny and sweet and embarrassing and heartwarming all in one. Plus – you get Derek in a Santa outfit. No lie.
“The light fades out pretty early in the afternoon, but his laptop’s on and Stiles keeps flicking his thumb across the screen of his phone. Derek’s unimpressed face stares at him in pulses of light, but he still hasn’t pressed the green button. It’s not like Derek will exactly bring the Christmas cheer.Stiles is feeling a little like a Dickens character. Three people show him the error of his ways.”
This starts out kind of melancholy but warms up till it’s totally going to melt you heart. I love the way Derek has clearly been patiently waiting for this moment, and I adore the way Stiles just grabs his opportunity and goes for it. Sleigh bells indeed!
“The Christmas sweater alone should have sent any rational person running; the terrible customer service and delight in Derek’s suffering were just icing.”
Waaaah! This is so cute! Told over three Christmases (yes it takes Derek that long to find his words) this is the most adorable look at a Derek who’s family are alive and who’s worst nightmare is his sisters finding out about his crush. Head to the gift shop to sample the sweet goods!
“A Christmas AU involving New York, snow, baked treats, and hot chocolate.
Stiles is standing there, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot, and Derek doesn’t want to see him disappear into the apartment opposite without a promise to see him again. “Do you—would you like something to drink? Coffee?”
“Uh, yeah, sure.” Rubbing his hands together, Stiles nods and looks over his shoulder. “Can you give me a minute to get changed? I’ve got snow melting in places that I don’t want it to be melting.”
Derek laughs at the look on Stiles’ face and nods. “Knock when you’re done.”
If Derek watches Stiles until the door closes, that’s no one’s business but his own.”
This has it all. Human AU, neighbours!sterek, Stiles is a New Yorker – and Claudia is alive and they run a BAKERY. It’s Christmas, there’s snow and hot chocolate and cakes. And the sweetest romance.
“Big, serious brown eyes were staring right into his from only a few inches away. The child had clambered half over the arm of Derek’s chair to study him at close range, her little rosebud mouth pursed in concentration.“Uh.” Derek couldn’t look away as the girl reached out one pudgy hand and patted him gently on the cheek. Her scent was soft and sweet and somehow a bit familiar, just enough to keep Derek from shying away.”
This is utterly sweet and totally fluffy. AU where Derek has left Beacon Hills and is en route back after a long absence, he bumps into an old friend with a new addition at the airport on Christmas eve and the possibilities seem endless.
“Derek quietly loves Christmas and is not afraid to wear the sweaters to show it. He hosts a children’s TV show about science and history, builds model trains, and is painfully awkward. Stiles works in a Hallmark-type store that sells Christmas decorations and model train pieces, and might have an unhealthy appreciation for sweaters. Of course he was going to fall for Derek. Of course he was.”
“Scott can never resist cheeseburgers and Stiles’ drama” is just one of the perfectly hilarious lines in this fic. Derek is shy and adorable and there are ugly knitted christmas jumpers and alive! and fabulous Hale Family. This one is a delight from start to finish and you’re all going to love it.
“Derek saves a nymph from being somebody’s Christmas decoration. As a reward, the nymph grants him a twig of mistletoe.
If Derek had known the mistletoe would come to life and goad him into kissing people at random, he might have tried to refuse.
*
Of course, Derek doesn’t notice. Not at first. How would he, when he’s alone? The mistletoe can’t do anything to him when he’s alone. It just sits in the house, hung above the fireplace, next to his tiny Christmas tree. Only when he shows up at Scott’s to return Melissa’s stepladder—Lydia and Stiles insisted he put up Christmas lights—does he realize the gift’s true purpose.
Melissa lifts one corner of her mouth in a wry smile and tells him, “You’ve got a little something right—” and reaches up above his head.”
Okay so this is one of my favourites. I love the idea, true love’s kiss and all that. But most of all I love the way the pack is written, all together and playing such big parts of each other’s lives – with Lydia is a fabulous highlight. Derek is beautifully written and I just want to cuddle him.
“In the newly-rebuilt Hale House, Derek is hosting Christmas Eve dinner for the pack, most of whom have scattered for college, and Stiles is cooking. But a freak storm knocks out the power and snows everyone in, preventing them from making it to Derek’s, so he and Stiles spend Christmas Eve together. Feelings ensue as they come up with some creative ways to conserve body heat.”
We’ve got it all here – our two lovely boys being healthy and happy, a rebuilt Hale house, Christmas Eve, getting snowed in – and even a candlelit dinner. This is soft, sweet, and has a dash of smut. The perfect seasonal recipe!
“Stiles is saving Derek’s life. Again. He thinks there should be some kind of reward system for them. When he suggests it, Derek reveals it’s his birthday. Stiles feels a little guilty that all he can give Derek for it is his life-saving abilities, so he decides to make it up to him on the next gift-giving holiday.”
Okay so this wouldn’t be a Christmas rec list without a Secret Santa fic, right?! This is adorable, and again it’s one of the fics I love for the pack bonding and the relationships that are all so warm and loving. Derek’s pack being happy makes him happy. ‘Nuff said.
“Based on a prompt from this list: i live below you and i was minding my own business watching the snowfall out the window WHEN I SAW A BODY FALL ARE YOU REALLY PUTTING UP CHRISTMAS LIGHTS NOW”
So this one is short and sweet – a gorgeous little prompt fill that sees our boys as neighbours and all kinds of puns and good stuff. Fluffy, adorable, and perfect to read if you want a smile!
“What,” Stiles says, and he’s aware that he doesn’t quite make it a question, but he currently can’t feel his toes so he figures he’s allowed.
“Do you want a ride home or not?” Derek huffs impatiently, each word forming a visible cloud in the cold night air as he digs around in the Jeep’s trunk to grab as many bags as he can carry and transfer them to his own car.
Oh man oh man. This is just so lovely! Don’t be worried by the sliiightly angsty beginning – you know me well enough by now that this obviously has a happy ending. All I feel I need to tell you about this fic is that there are Emotions with a capital ‘E’ and Derek, all wet from the rain. Read on my lovelies.
I hope you all enjoy reading them as much as I did!
“When Stiles gets stranded in the snow one dark and snowy night, he’s in real danger. Fortunately, he gets rescued by a man on a horse.”
This is a gorgeous fic – stranded Stiles, Derek to the rescue. With full on woodland cabin and home-made cookies to round out the sweetness. It’s a very soft, gentle and lovely fic to read – makes you feel all warm and hopeful.
“Derek isn’t sure why he buys the house. He doesn’t need the space, that much is certain. While it’s not as big as the one Derek grew up in, something about the cheerful yellow paint and the wide staircase (with banisters wide enough for children to slide down) draws him in.”
Ohhh. Oh, this is a good one. We get deputy!derek, a full pack, Derek and Stiles both growing up and maturing and finally finding their perfect moment to become. It might be more Christmas-tangential than full on Christmassy but its going on the list – the fairy lights at the end are too perfectly written to miss out on. You’ll love it.
“Stiles is funny and smart and kind and is also his daughter’s teacher and his boss’s son. On the list of people who are off-limits, Stiles has held the top spot for as long as Derek has known him.
Halloween Fic Recs With Halloween right around the corner, here are some of my favorite Sterek Halloween fics
Something Spooky, Something Bluebycrossroadswrite General Audiences Words: 2,483 Derek sighs and boredly stuffs a handful of gummi bears in his mouth, straight out of a Halloween candy bowl Aunt Olivia insists in buying every year even if they never get trick or treaters this far into the woods.
He tilts his head and tunes back into the boys’ conversation, which has been the prime time entertainment of the Hales for the past ten minutes or so.
“It’s dark,” one of the boys whines.
“Don’t be a baby, Scott,” the second chastises.
“But, I don’t wanna,” Scott whines, like a baby.
Hallow’s Warmthbyraisesomehale Mature Words: 6,823 Derek and Cora own the little coffee shop downtown, Stiles is the regular and talkative client that Derek may or may not be infatuated with, and the cold weather is extremely inconvenient considering it dusts Stiles’ cheeks with a rosy shade of red and causes his breath to frost over in white puffs whenever he laughs.Pining and Halloweenie things ensue.
And Also, I Love Youbyalisvolatpropiis Explicit Words: 7,155 Derek didn’t look at all like Stiles expected. After all, he deliberately chose a school where being a nerd was cool, so he certainly wasn’t expecting his hotter-than-a-thousand-stars roomie to be an actual cool person. Derek has muscles, like everywhere, which he has a tendency to display in skin-tight, sleeveless t-shirts for bands Stiles has never heard of; his jeans are always tight and ripped too, and he has an impressive five-o’clock shadow, the tips of his jet-black hair dyed purple. And his eyes. Stiles is pretty sure he’s only seen eyes like that in comics, or on a movie screen, or in his freakin dreams. They’re somehow simultaneously all of the colors and none of them, transcending something so pedestrian and insignificant as words to encapsulate their beauty. Stiles would come to learn that he’s also wickedly smart, and he plays the guitar and speaks multiple languages, and his sunshine smile is even more alarming that his resting murder face.
You’re the Only One(sie) for Mebymikkimouse Teen Words: 8,414 Stiles buys Halloween costumes online and badgers Derek into wearing one for a party at the Preserve, because they’re friends now and friends do those kinds of things. It’s all fun and games until he and Derek turn into their costumes.
Stiles probably should have done a little more research on the seller.
bonfires burning bright (room in my coffin tonight)byhito Explicit Words: 12,223 Stiles may hate Halloween, but he loves working at the Haunted House – at least until the new girl steals his cushy job in the office. But she also introduces him to the guy he’s had a crush on for years, so he supposes she can’t be a total witch. That doesn’t mean Derek isn’t a vampire.
reason to staybybleep0bleep Teen Words: 12,564 Life is cruel. Derek Hale is only going to be here in Beacon Hills for a week. Sundays Fun Days is a lie. It was not fun, getting a bit of hope and having it torn away.
How much wooing can Stiles do in a week, anyway?
It’s the last week of October, and a small town baker has run into his first crush again. Fate might have other ideas. Stiles tries for romance with a little help from what Beacon Hills does best— Halloween.
Imagine Me And Youbycallunavulgari Teen Words: 16,080 “My name,” the kid tells Derek, sounding amused. “It’s Stiles. I figure if I’m going to wrestle a complete stranger for a pumpkin the least I can do is offer my name afterwards.”
“Stiles,” Derek tries, testing the way the name sits on his tongue. “I’m Derek.”
“Derek,” Stiles breathes, like he’s testing the weight of the name too. He grins, bright and blinding, which Derek guesses means that he likes the sound of it. “I’d offer to shake your hand, but since we almost got to second base a minute ago, I’d say we’re past that point.”
Feeling like he’s the only sane person left on planet earth, Derek rolls his eyes heavenward. “First of all, there’s not a mound of dust sitting where he used to be -” he gestures upwards towards the sun like behold, the light, and Scott’s jaw tics, “and second of all, he’s never done anything even remotely suspicious.”
Which is true. The most malicious thing Stiles does is watch television late at night and talk to himself – two things that Scott and Derek can hear crystal clear through the walls of their apartment with their werewolf ears. That being said, neither of them have ever heard Stiles muttering something like who shall I prey upon tonight or I must get my coffin ready for my slumber. The most suspect thing Derek’s over heard over there is the crinkling sound of way too many snack foods.
I said I was going to make a Fall/Halloween rec list.So here it is, I love ghost stories, so there is a few of those. There are also zombie fics, witches and a vampire. …. maybe some love for pumpkin spice too. ❤
Derek works at his family’s pumpkin patch every year. This year, he finds himself distracted by one of their customers.
I said I was going to make a Fall/Halloween rec list.So here it is, I love ghost stories, so there is a few of those. There are also zombie fics, witches and a vampire. …. maybe some love for pumpkin spice too. ❤
After practically being raised watching Buffy, The X-Files, and Ghostbusters, Stiles liked to think his reaction to seeing a shimmery shadow resembling a seventeen year old boy floating ten inches above ground and glaring fiercely at him wouldn’t be to let out a high pitch scream, try to karate chop him, and then, when that obviously didn’t work, throw a basketball at him.
A basketball that just went right through the boy’s stomach.
“Stiles shouldn’t accept rides from werewolves he meets behind abandoned convenience stores.” In which the zombie apocalypse is just one of their worries.
Stiles is surprisingly okay with all the weird shit that goes on at Beacon City Historic Ghost Town – ghost lights, howling, pianos playing on their own. Having to work closely with the surly blacksmith is another matter.
When Derek Hale arrives at the Beacon Hills Young Adult Rehabilitation Center, he plans on keeping his head down and serving the rest of his time in minimum security peace. Stiles Stilinski changes all of that.
With the cool breeze, the changing leaves, and general fall feeling in the air comes Stiles’s excitement for one of his favorite holidays, Halloween! And with that comes one of his favorite ghoulish pastimes: the infamous Beacon County haunted maze. He and Scott have been going every year since they were old enough to go in, and this year, he decides that it’s time to introduce Derek to the wonder that is the haunted maze.
By twenty-eight, Stiles has resigned himself to a quiet life of working in his magic shop, selling Jackson Whittemore fart-inducing tea, and looking after his goddaughter. It’s a good life. But the quiet goes to hell when his sister, Lydia, shows up with a crispy werewolf in her trunk and a bite mark on her shoulder, because hard on her heels comes the hottest person Stiles has ever seen, and he happens to be looking for his uncle.
You know, the dead guy Stiles helped Lydia bury last night.
“Since you’re so sure, what’s the proof that you have that he’s not a vampire?”
Feeling like he’s the only sane person left on planet earth, Derek rolls his eyes heavenward. “First of all, there’s not a mound of dust sitting where he used to be -” he gestures upwards towards the sun like behold, the light, and Scott’s jaw tics, “and second of all, he’s never done anything even remotely suspicious.”
