needshisbones:

Sometimes I just think about Jim and Bones and I just.

Like, Bones is a salty fucker, there’s no doubt about it. And yeah, he can and will call Jim out when necessary and get fucking furious with him. But he’s like, so fucking devoted to Jim that it’s ridiculous. He knows what’s troubling Jim even when Jim can’t voice it. He knows what Jim needs. He’s fiercely protective of him and the complete and utter devastation he felt when Jim died in ID was beyond words.

BONES FOLLOWED JIM INTO SPACE. INTO DISEASE AND DANGER WRAPPED IN DARKNESS AND SILENCE. HE KEEPS FOLLOWING HIM.

But even as he’s all ‘Space. God help me.’ You see him in Beyond when Jim isn’t himself, when Jim doesn’t feel the wonder of space and the unknown and it’s wrong. It’s off. Because he doesn’t love space like Jim does, but he loves that Jim loves space because it makes Jim, JIM. Bones gets so feel some of that love and wonder for something that terrifies him through Jim. Jim keeps Bones wild and Bones keeps Jim grounded.

So even as I love his salty sarcastic moments, I love his softer moments more.

For the ship-ask thing! 14 and McKirk pretty please!

#14: things you said after you kissed me

“Oh, hell.” McCoy said in a quiet rush of breath as he pulled away from where he was leaning over his desk to kiss Kirk and turned away from him. Kirk stayed rooted to the spot, blinking in bewilderment.

“Bones?” He said after it became evident that McCoy wasn’t planning on turning back around any time soon.

McCoy didn’t look at him, instead started fidgeting with the array of objects on the shelf behind his desk. “Sorry, Jim. That was, uh, really damned unprofessional of me.”

“Yes, it was.” Kirk chuckled, then immediately regretted it when he saw McCoy’s shoulders stiffen. “Bones… we’ve known each other too long for professionalism.”

McCoy snorted. “I know a certain pointy-eared first officer who’d disagree with you.”

“This is about Spock?” Kirk said, even more confused than he had been. “What exactly do you think is going on here, Bones?”

“Of course it isn’t about Spock. It’s about… boundaries. The chain of command. You know we can’t do this or you would have made the first move years ago.”

That stung. That stung, because it was true. “Why are you making it now, then?”

McCoy sighed and seemed to fold in on himself. After a moment he turned back around to look Jim in the eye, his expression weary.

“Between Spock deciding to go home to Vulcan and us scheduled to return to Earth at the end of the month… I dunno, Jim, I guess I’m just feeling….”

Oh. That’s what this was about.

“The mission ending doesn’t mean we’re going to lose each other.” Kirk said with a soft smile. ‘What, did you think we were going to dock and go our separate ways, never to speak again?”

“Your first officer certainly seems to want that.” McCoy prickled. Kirk’s smile faltered.

“I don’t know what’s going on with Spock,” he began, “and I don’t know what we’re all going to be doing next, but this ship, Bones, this crew… we belong together. People may drift, but they’ll always find their way back to the Enterprise. And you’ll always know where to find me.”

One day Jim surprises Bones by showing up to the McCoy farm unannounced and he finds Bones walking around looking like this. He’s not used to a rugged unshaven Bones and seeing this causes him to be the most romantic man he can be with Mint Juleps and homemade sugar cookies

Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humility and awareness of my own frailty. – The Doctors’ Hippocratic Oath

10 or 21 for McKirk.

pherryt:

This…did not stay short. I tried. I really really tried. but it’s still a little over 1k! I also kept trying to do research for planets and diseases from TOS. So i think i spent at least half the time i was writing this actually researching. Well, trying to.

10. ‘If there’s no food, I’m going home.’

21. ‘I’m trying to have a serious conversation with you.’

I somehow managed to incorporate both, though the focus is on 21.

Star Trek, McKirk, Confessions, Misunderstandings

Jim Kirk stared at his Chief Medical Officer in frustration.
“Bones, I’m trying to have a serious
conversation with you!”

Leonard’s brow rose and his mouth twisted up. “Since when does
Jim Kirk do those?”

“Since when – what? Are you kidding me? I have serious
conversations with you all the time!” Jim gritted out in exasperation.

Leonard snorted and turned away, fiddling with a piece of
equipment Jim only had a very vague idea of what it did. “Right, like that time
you threatened to leave a peace talk – risking an international incident, might
I add – because they didn’t have any food.”

“That was serious!
Don’t you remember? I was still recovering from the Altarian Flu and I hadn’t
eaten in like, a week!” Jim protested. “And I wasn’t really gonna leave.”

“What about that time you tried to convince Sulu someone was
messing with his plants?”

“Well, how was I supposed
to know that that species of flora regularly uprooted itself to take a walk?”

“You could have asked him, seeing as he is the botany expert on board,” Leonard pointed out reasonably, but
his shoulders were tense and his movements stiff.

Jims eyes narrowed. “Wait, wait…Bones…turn around and look
at me.”

“I’m busy, Jim,” Leonard snapped out.

Jim reached forward and touched Leonard’s shoulder softly,
drawing him around. The doctor looked nervous as he scowled at his captain.
Beneath the scowl was something else and Jim focused on that with laser beam
precision.
