when you realize none of you really know what you’re doing
I like to think that the missions with just the two of them are Jim’s favorite. Because with the rest of his crew, he has to put up a confident front, act like he has all the answers, like he’s sure of himself every step of the way. But Bones has known Jim since the beginning, long before he became a respected captain. He knows damn well that Jim has no sweet clue what he’s doing sometimes. And sure, he gives him shit for it, but he still comes along every time he’s asked because he trusts Jim despite knowing that he doesn’t have all the answers. And on the missions with Bones, Jim is allowed to get scared, to get frustrated, to show uncertainty. Because he knows he has Bones’ trust and support no matter what, and it means the world to him.
Leonard McCoy has at least 4 blankets on his bed at all times because the ship gets really cold and he refuses to mess with the temperature controls in his room and chooses to simply suffer instead.
The only time he’s truley warm in his room is when he’s in bed, laying under all of those comfy blankets.
Sometimes Jim will come in to wake him up for breakfast or an early morning work out (Leonard’s least favorite activity, let me sleep dman it Jim) and find Leonard huddled under all of his blankets refusing to get up. He has to pull all of the blankets off at once, and that’s just mean cuz then the cold hits Leonard like a ton of bricks and he just wants to die before he can suffer any longer.
Other times, Jim joins Leonard in bed and smiles when he curls up into his arms for warm in the middle of the night (as if he doesn’t have 500 blankets on his bed. it’s hot her Bones what the hell?). It’s an amazing feeling, having Leonard lay his head on Jim’s chest and wrap and arm around his waist so that he can hold him close.
