McKirk- Teens

Leonard is the Jock at Jim’s new school. Not popular by any stretch of the imagination (people actually think he’s super weird cuz he’s always grumpy and complaining about everything), but he’s known for playing basketball and soccer and being one of the best players on both teams.

Jim doesn’t know much about the other teen, just that everyone is talking about all the collages sending out recruiters to see if he’s someone they want to bring in on an athletics scholarship.

Jim, on the other hand, is a total nerd, but a popular nerd. He gets along with everyone, loves getting into trouble and going to parties, but also enjoys shoving his nose into a book and dreams about joining Starfleet one day as a science officer. He can’t wait to see space and all of the cool things that he can only imagine Starfleet officers get to see.

So to say that Leonard and Jim are complete opposites is a bit of an understatement. They’re two people you wouldn’t expect to find anywhere near each other.

Which is why When Jim sits down beside Leonard in the cafeteria on a particularly busy lunch period after he arrived late (thank you late morning science study group) the whole room goes dead silent.

No one knows what is going to happen. How is Leonard the grump going to react to someone with Jim’s energy and charisma? How long will it take jim to roll his eyes and shove his nose into a book like he always does when someone is boring him?

Half the room actually expects Leonard to shove jim away from the table. Everyone knows Leonard prefers to eat alone, and he hates when people are in his space. And given that the table is already packed, Jim is elbow to elbow with the Jock.

Except, Leonard doesn’t shove Jim away. He doesn’t even growl or grumble. Instead, he actually moved over so that he’s taking up more of the person on his left sides space, and actually smiles when Jim looks at him in surprise.

Jim and Leonard don’t become friends quickly. Neither of them really think they can. But after that day, Jim decides to make it a personal goal to go to as many games of leonard’s as he can, and sit with Leonard at Lunch whenever he can, which doesn’t seem to bother Leonard at all.

They don’t even talk for the first week. They just eat their lunch in silence. After a week though, Leonard actually offers Jim part of his cupcake, stating he can never finish any of the sweets his dad packs in his lunch for him (a true fact in Jim’s experience. Over the last week he has never seen Leonard completly finish one sweet)

After that they start actually having conversations. Nothing much at first, just telling each other about their school day, but soon it stretches out into telling each other about things they like doing, where they enjoy going, and even what they want to do in the future. And to say jim is shocked when Leonard states that he doesn’t want to go to collage to be a sports star is an understatement. Everyone knows Leonard is prime pickings to go to collage on an athletes scholarship, so what else could he possibley want?

It takes jim another week to get the answer out of Leonard, and it only happens when he runs across the other teen in the field after school. Leonard isn’t at practice with the soccer team, but is instead sitting under one of the schools biggest trees reading an old medical textbook. As soon as he see’s jim he puts the textbook down and invites him over to sit with him.

Jim brings up the book slowly, wondering if he said something wrong when Leonard grimaces. But Leonard just tells him it’s what he wants to do. That he wants to be a doctor like his dad and help as many people as he can.

Jim gets a real grimace when he asks if Leonard’s going to join Starfleet, and he doesn’t understand at all until Leonard explains his fear of space. How he wants to reach out to as many people as possible and how meeting all of these amazing new races and people would be fantastic, but he doesn’t think he’d be a good doctor at all in a situation that constantly has him on edge.

Jim just nodds his head. He has fears of his own, he understands where Leonard is coming from, but he does think he’s selling himself short and he says as much.

Over the next year Jim and Leonard become inseparable. People at school actually get used to seeing the energetic nerd and grumpy jock together, and it becomes a little joke that opposites really do attract and Jim and Leonard are proof of this.

When Jim gets his acceptence letter to starfleet near the end of the year, he’s extatic. The first person he tells is Leonard and he can’t stop smiling as he goes on about all the things he’ll learn and see. It’s not until he actually looks at Leonard that he notices he isn’t smiling at all. He actually looks sad.

When he asks Leonard what’s wrong, the Jock just smiles sadly and tells Jim he’s going to be awsome in Starfleet and they’re going to love having him. He can already see all the news headings about Jim’s works and discovers, and Jim loves the idea. He adores that Leonard is so supportive, but it doesn’t change the fact that Leonard also looks so alone.

On graduation day, Jim walks over to Leonard after everyone has gotten their diploma and thrown their hats in the air. Leonard beams at him as he walks over, and slaps him on the shoulder proudly as soon as he’s close enough.

Jim ends up asking which school Leonards going to. He knows Leonard got a lot of offers for athletic scholarships, and was having a tough time choicing.

What surprises him though is when Leonard pulls up an acceptence letter from Starfleet. The last place Jim ever thought Leonard would go. When he says as much, Leonard just smiles softly and tells him “I couldn’t let you have all the fun. Besides, who else is going to keep you alive while you go off and find New diseases and death?”

Jim isn’t sure when exactly he kissed Leonard. All he knows is that the room has suddenly erupted in cheer once more and Leonard is holding him close and refusing to let go.

He didn’t think his future could be any more amazing that being part of Starfleet and exploring the universe, but now he’s certain nothing can top doing all of that with Leonard by his side.

Bones: Phasers ready?

Kirk: Check.

Bones: Did you have breakfast?

Kirk: What? That’s not on the checklist.

Bones: I added it because I care about you.

Kirk: No, I did not have breakfast.

Bones: Unacceptable. Look in your pocket.

Kirk: [pulls out granola bar] Hey, there’s little chocolate chips in this.

Bones: Yeah, I’m not an idiot. I know how to trick you into eating your fiber.
