Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God. — The Hippocratic Oath (insp)
Bones finding out that Sulu has a young daughter that he never gets to see, and immediately feeling his heart go out. Bones asking after Demora at every opportunity and watching Sulu light up at the chance to brag. Bones recommending extra shore leave shifts for Sulu for “medical reasons” whenever Ben is able to bring Demora to where the Enterprise is docked. Bones bringing little trinkets back for Sulu from the away missions he doesn’t get to go on so that he can give them to Demora and get in return one of those thousand-watt, worshipping smiles that Bones misses so much from when Joanna was that age.
Bones dropping by Sulu’s quarters on Demora’s birthdays, after Sulu has ended the video call with his little girl and the big smile he wore for her has faded. Bones listening with an empathetic ear while Sulu tells stories about his daughter and admits how much he misses her. Bones helping Sulu record little videos for her, everything from encouraging tutorials on the subjects she’s struggling with in school to ridiculous music videos that Bones can barely get through without cracking up to heartfelt messages that sometimes get far too serious and end with Bones putting down the recording equipment and and just sitting quietly with Sulu while he wipes the tears from his eyes. Bones promising Sulu that Demora will understand one day, that she won’t hate him for being gone so often, that she’ll be proud of the father who clearly loves her so much. Bones privately wishing he could be certain of that himself.
Bones being paged to the transporter room one day and arriving to find Sulu with his arm around Joanna, both of them beaming from ear to ear. Bones running across the room and gathering his little girl – not so little anymore – into his arms and burying his face in her hair to hide the fact that he’s the one with teary eyes now. Bones finding out that Sulu reached out to Joanna months ago and they’ve been plotting this surprise ever since. Bones watching Joanna beam away again with a heavy heart and feeling Sulu’s hand on his shoulder. Bones listening to Sulu telling him that he was right.
I am never, ever, drawing punk!Bones with all of his tattoos on display again.
Some of his tattoos have meaning, so here we go:
– The greek on his arm is the line ‘I will keep them from harm and injustice’ from the medical oath of Hippocrates.
– The list of Roman numerals on his ribs is Joanna’s birthday, listed in order as day, month, and year.
– The arrow next to it has Joanna’s name in the middle.
– On his chest is a compass with the words ‘Not all who wander are lost’, and it surrounds a heart. In some roundabout way, this combination of words and symbols mean that home is where the heart is.
– The words ‘primum non nocere’ on his left leg is Latin for ‘do no harm’.
– ‘I love you’, which is written on his left foot, is written in David McCoy’s handwriting, the last three words in the letter given to Bones after his father’s death.
This is abso-fucking-lutely wonderful and I need it on my blog!!!
