The most important moment in Jim’s life is the day Leonard proposed.
It’s nothing big or extravagant. There aren’t even any people around to see it. It’s just him and Leonard, and he wouldn’t expect it any other way.
What he doesn’t expect, however, is the engagement ring. He always thought if Bones proposed to him it would be with something simple. A silver or gold band and nothing else. It made sense after all, bones didn’t like attention and a ring with a diamond would defiantly garner a LOT of attention.
Instead, he finds himself looking down at a familiar ring tucked away safely in a brand new ring box. A ring he has seen on Leonard’s hand every day since they met. A ring that would only fit on his pinky.
He can’t help but cry. That ring is precious to leonard. He’s always on edge if he forget to put it on during the day or if he thinks it might be damaged after a bad mission.
“Why?” He doesn’t mean for it to come out sounding rude. He loves the ring, he’s just not sure why Bones would use the most precious thing he has to propose to Jim with.
“It made sense” Bones shruggs “my ma always told me that if I wanted to keep someone safe to tell her and she’s do everything she could to help. Now when I can’t be there to keep you safe, she can”
Jim can work carefully if the situation calls for it, but Bones is anything but a subtle man. Jim still wonders how he made it all through the academy without realizing Bones had a thing for him.
Bones claims Jim is just that oblivious, but he also blushes when Jim brings it up so Jim is pretty sure Bones is shyer than he lets on.
Once bones had to sling Jim over his shoulder in a fireman’s carry. If Jim hadn’t been half unconscious because of pain from what appeared to be a very aggressive stinging nettle like plant, he would have been telling Bones just how much of a turn on it was that he could pick Jim up like that.
Even when half conscious, Jim can tell when Bones is the one taking care of him. There is something about Bones being close that rings in the air differently from anyone else. Jim could recognize Bones anywhere just from the way the air seems to shift to make room for him.
Everyone expects Jim to look good in his dress uniform, but few are prepared how damned good Bones looks. Jim sure as hell wasn’t. Sulu actually had to tell him to stop staring.
Headcanon: Bones always looks very calm and relaxed when he’s reading, even if he’s focusing very intensely on it. Jim, on the other hand, will look like whatever he’s reading has just insisted he turn his ship over to the nearest Klingon; slightly concerned and very confused. This is true of anything from fantasy novels to mission reports to birthday cards. Bones has had a picture of that face on his PADD’s background for years.
Headcanon: Jim loves to come up behind Bones and nuzzle into his back. He also tends to put his very cold hands on Bones very warm stomach, but Bones finds that part less endearing.
In star trek into darkness when Leonard finds himself walking onto the bridge with a Captain who is NOT Jim, he immidiatly pulls out his Padd and writes up his transfer before sending it to both the Captain and first officer.
Spock sees it first and just looks over at him in confusion cuz they’re supposed to leave today and what the hell is Leonard thinking
But the Captain actually turns around in his spot and asks what this is about.
To which Leonard replies with a simple “this is not my ship, and you are not my captain. Wherever you shipped Jim off to, that’s the ship I belong on”
The Captain absolutly tries to talk him out of this transfer because this is ridiculous, but Leonard is not budging.
And if Spock is a little impressed by Leonard’s loyalty, he doesn’t tell him until after Jim is back in the Captain’s seat and Nyota is telling him the epic tale of Leonard telling the ‘fake captain’ where to shove it
