so I realize that was a pretty serious episode but can we talk about the video compilation that definitely gets shared in the Discovery security file logs of captain Lorca walking into brightly lit spaces and yelling
“You didn’t warn me she could do that, Mr. Stamets.”
I love that she walks out first, on her own, before her guard. Also I could watch that pan shot from her feet up all day..
It also shows the difference in leadership (albeit twisted mirroverse leadership) styles between the Emperor and Lorca – she’s front and centre, phaser drawn, he’s off to the side, ducking into the shadows, letting everyone else get their hands dirty…
Can we talk about how exquisitely designed the set and lighting is here?
Emperor G stepping into this cathedral-like space with the golden light behind her making her glow like some kind of saintly leader.
The rebels ahead of her, lying in wait in the dark, with all of the attendant metaphors that implies.
The halo effect around her head even as she raises her phaser and her guards arrange themselves around her.
The ‘divine’ intervention of the shield and her emergency transport beam.
I think this is an important moment that clarifies how the Emperor sees herself, and every trick in the design, photography, and set design, has been employed to make us see her that way too. Something to remember as things unfold and we see more of her I think.
Because we all know – you don’t become Emperor of hell by being a good angel.
What interests you most about him (Captain Lorca)?
That aspect, the fact that I wasn’t playing the same color over and
over again, that there were hidden depths to this man, that he was going
to react in surprising ways in different situations, that he had maybe
other agendas at certain points with people that were… that they knew
about themselves or they didn’t know about themselves. He’s in denial
about certain things. That he was recognizably human, and that it was a
story born out of our times to tell of our times, these very troubling,
dark times we live in, divisive times we live in. And that it wasn’t
trying to retread anything. I didn’t feel like I was filling the gap
between adverts. I felt like it was something that would hold your
interest round a camp fire.

I’m pretty excited by this. Emperor Georgiou presented her daughter as a victim of Lorca’s, but up until that point I had imagined her as an instigator and a leader after all she was the empress daughter and he was the general she would out-rank him from the start.
Could it be… Could it be that Empress Pippa was – I can barely write the word – lying?
Who would have ever imagined such a thing?
The mind boggles.
Honestly I hope it’s more interesting than that. That Petunia told the truth as she understood it. You’re raised in an evil society that doesn’t value love and only view others as objects to be exploited. So one of them had to be exploiting the other, that just has to be the case.
