Sterek is not dead.

I’ve heard it around a couple times today and there might be some people freaking out because they feel like the enthusiasm for Sterek is dwindling. That is most definitely not the case. I’d say that the Sterek fandom is even stronger and more creative than it has ever been.

But that’s not to say that this fandom hasn’t changed over the years. We’ve changed and grown tremendously over the years. We’ve adapted. For started, we’ve detached from the Teen Wolf fandom and have become something completely separate—something that allows us exist without being tormented by bullies.

We’ve been through some tough shit as a fandom together. For instance, 3B (2014) marked the beginning of Teen Wolf’s attempts to destroy Sterek within the show, as well as they started to push Sterek fans away. This was where the writers worked to purposely kept Stiles and Derek away from interacting with one another. The same thing happened in S4 (2014) and then Tyler Hoechlin ended up leaving the show.

But despite having no more in-show material with our favorite guys, despite the show working to hurt us, and despite losing the character of Derek Hale, the Sterek Fandom has refused to back down. We still create, we still ship Sterek, and we still continue to move forward.

In 2015, Sterek was named the 16th most popular and most reblogged ship on Tumblr (Buzzfeed post & Tumblr’s Year In Review). After almost 2 years of getting no canon Sterek material and having Derek leave the show, this ship continued to stay strong and prominent alongside pairings from some of the more current television shows.

In July 2015, Sterek was recorded as being the 3rd most popular pairing on Ao3, with 34,999 works involving Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski as a pairing.

Right now, as I write this post in October 2016, Sterek has a grand total of 44,673 works on Ao3. Our fandom continues to create and publish fantastic new fanfiction daily and the momentum isn’t slowing down.

Fanwork is published daily in the #Sterek tag, as well as other Sterek-related tags here on Tumblr. Check out #eternalsterek and #sterekedit for even more amazing Sterek-related edits, manips, fanart, and fanfiction. There’s always something new to find and smile about in this fandom.

If you’re searching for even more creative Sterek fanwork, I suggest checking out derekandstiles.com and The Official Sterek Library for a dazzling Sterek fanfic-rec collection. The Sterek Book is also an always enjoyable read, filled with fanart and written passages about why Sterek is and always will be an important ship to cherish.

Sterek is not dead. Sterek is eternal

Plenty of men who sexually harass, rape, and abuse would tell you with a straight face that they “respect women.” What they mean is this: I respect women who are respectable. I respect women who are white. I respect women from my religion. I respect women from my family. I respect women who fit my own sexist, racist, classist horrible criteria for what and who a woman should be. When a woman oversteps this—whens she is too sexy, or of a different race or class, or my wife who has “taken the wrong tone” with me—then she is not respectable anymore.

here’s a thought

let’s tell young boys that they are brimming with kindness and imagination and nobility. point out their gentleness, their fierce joy and limitless capacity to love everyone and everything. tell them they are princes in a kingdom of wonders and beauty and thoughtfulness and the warmth of their own hearts. take them to museums and symphonies and forests to make tree forts in. raise them to empathize, innovate and do good things. with confidence and humility.

The problem with being a writer is that you have to be your characters.

You can’t write a charming character by saying they’re charming, you actually need to be charming and write them charming dialog. You can’t just state somebody is smart, you need to write smart things for them to say and do.
